A petition by Croton artist and civic leader Ken Sargeant, and persistent questioning by The Croton Chronicle, has led county park officials to relent on closing Mother's Lap Beach.
Huge thanks to the Chronicle and Ken for taking this on. I moved here in 1991, too, and totally agree with his quote above. My kid grew up exploring that beach year-round from toddlerhood up until it was closed sometime during the pandemic. Very happy to have access to this peaceful place of amazing beauty restored to the community!
While many in the region enjoy Croton Point during the off-season, I feel that action penalized the most frequent and assessable visitors during winter, Croton residents.
I always found it unfortunate that there is no benefit as a Croton resident in terms of paying a reduced rate when they do charge, and blocking off that beautiful portion added insult to injury. Although I am sure all county parks work in that way and can’t show favoritism to the residents of the given town.
Thank you to Ken, those he worked with and the Chronicle for shedding light and correcting this!
I've emailed them over the years, requesting they come up with a seasonal parking pass for local residents, at something less than the daily rate, but never got a response. It is our local park. Paying ten bucks everytime your kid wants to go to the playground adds up, and it's why we spent so much time there in the off season, when the parking fee was not in effect.

Thanks Chele, we have to savor our victories, they don’t come as often as they should but this is definitely one!
good work!
A team effort! As for the Chronicle’s part, we kept insisting on serious answers until they relented.
Great news and as it should be!
