Another, even more tempting, discounted subscription offer for the holidays!
Take out a paid sub to the Chronicle between now and December 25 for 30% off.
Hello again, Free Subscriber to The Croton Chronicle.
Just a while ago we offered you 20% off an annual paid subscription if you took advantage of it by December 1. Some of you did, although not as many as we might have liked. Perhaps many are happy with the fact that at least 3/4 of our posts are free, in front of the paywall, and don’t feel the need to read that fourth story which requires a paid subscription.
We admit that we are generous to a fault. All profiles of Croton people are free, stories about what Croton people are doing are free, postings of flyers announcing Croton-related events are free—we give so much away it’s a good thing we don’t have an accountant or financial advisor to tell us to stop doing it.
But some articles are not free, especially those that require intensive reporting on subjects that we follow day in and day out so that you, the readers, can be well informed.
There was just an example of this yesterday. How many in Croton knew what the developers of 425 South Riverside Avenue had in mind for the property, no matter what one’s position on housing development in the village? Not many, we feel confident in saying, even if some of us knew something was brewing at that property (village officials certainly knew, months ago, our reporting tells us.)
And since you are a free subscriber, you probably do not know all the details either. That’s because we paywalled that story, which fit the criteria for the minority of paid articles we publish. The devil is in the details, and the details are in the paywalled segment of the story. We are not trying to be coy, but we don’t want to be taken advantage of either. This reporting is hard work and takes a lot of resources.
Are we asking you to pay so that you can access all of our content? No. That is not why we are asking. Rather, we are asking you to do something more noble and more conducive to fostering serious democracy in our village and elsewhere:
Support local journalism, which is in danger everywhere in the nation.
So now we are going to make it even easier to do the right thing. Click on this link right here, and you can have 30% off of an annual subscription. You have until December 25 to do it.
Don’t do it for us. The Chronicle has survived for more than a year even though not everyone is paying, and it is not going away any time soon. Perhaps there will come a day when a publication like this that gives most of its content away for free will not be able to continue to function, but we are not there yet.
Do it for yourself, and for democracy, which requires an informed public—even in a small community like ours.
If you have any problems accessing the link or the 30% discount, please get in touch and we will get it sorted out: TheCrotonChronicle@gmail.com
Thank you.
