The one year anniversary of The Croton Chronicle is in just two months. Let’s celebrate by hitting 1000 subscribers!
Today the Chronicle’s email subscriber list is a mix of 870 free and paid subs, but some articles are read by 2000+ people. Let’s support local journalism by bumping up those numbers. You can help.
In two days, The Croton Chronicle will celebrate ten months since its first post about the life and times of the village of Croton-on-Hudson. That first article, entitled “Finkelstein tire site sold to major developer of multi-family housing,” was the first of dozens of reports on what is probably the most pressing issue in the village today.
In the next week or two, we will celebrate another milestone: We will have published 200 posts since October 29, 2023. That is an average of 20 reports each month. And roughly 3/4 of those posts are free, in front of the paywall; only about a quarter of all our stories are behind the paywall. And yet the price for all this is dirt cheap: Paid subscriptions start at $5/month, or you can save money by paying $50/year.
We won’t spend time going over all the topics we have covered over that time, but we think it is safe to say that very little of importance that goes on in our village does not get covered in the Chronicle—and, just as importantly, we have broken many stories that villagers would not know about otherwise. On top of breaking news and investigative pieces, we publish profiles of interesting and important Croton people, Guest Editorials that allow diverse views to be expounded on at length, and lots of announcements of things going on in the village.
A big reason why we have been able to do all that is what might be called crowdsourcing of the news: Dozens of villagers help us with news tips, behind the scenes reporting, and other assistance, and we are very grateful to them.
Now we want to reach a new milestone. It might be ambitious, but we would like to reach 1000 subscribers, paid or free, by our anniversary date of October 29. We think it is possible, because the rate of new subs has been increasing in recent weeks and months as more and more villagers realize that the Chronicle is actually essential reading for anyone who wants to know what is really going on in Croton. We think we have proved that time and again; and so we think it is reasonable to ask for your help reaching those 1000 subs.
What to do? Please share the Chronicle with friends and neighbors who are not now subscribed or perhaps not even reading it. If you have a paid sub, you will get credit for recommending new subscribers, usually in the form of free months on your own subscription. Many have already done that, and it has put a major upswing in our growth curve.

When October 29 rolls around, we will let you know how we did. Or should we say, how YOU did. This publication is for you and the Croton community. Please support local journalism and help it grow.
