Real estate industry organizes major mobilization against the proposed Good Cause Eviction Law in Croton. [Update January 7: Comment from Mayor of Nyack]
Opponents of the proposed tenant protection legislation plan to come out in force to the Board of Trustees public hearing on Wednesday January 8.
The Hudson Gateway Association of REALTORS (HGAR) plans major mobilization at the Wednesday public hearing.
As we reported last October, the Croton-on-Hudson Board of Trustees is considering a local version of New York’s Good Cause Eviction Law, which went into effect last April but must be opted into by local municipalities. At a work session on October 16, which was addressed by several advocates of the legislation, the mayor and trustees seemed favorable to adopting the legislation in Croton.
The law would not only require landlords to have good reasons for evicting tenants and not renewing leases, but would also limit “unreasonable” rent increases using a formula based on the Consumer Price Index as a floor.
In November, the Board scheduled a public hearing on the legislation, which will be held this Wednesday evening, January 8, during the body’s regularly scheduled meeting. The proceedings promise to be lively: Real estate industry groups, led by the Hudson Gateway Association of REALTORS (HGAR), are mobilizing to appear in force at the hearing and express their opposition to the measure.
