On Saturday May 3rd between 11AM - 4PM at Senasqua Park (rain date, May 10th) the Village of Croton-on-Hudson hosts its annual Earth Day celebration – a lively, fun event filled with activities for kids (including our inaugural Earth Ride), live music and good food. As Chair of the Village Conservation Advisory Council, I’ll be there to personally roll out the sustainable carpet for you.
But what exactly are we celebrating on Earth Day 2025?
The resilience of an Earth that we’ve poked, prodded, abused and all too occasionally cherished and protected?
That’s a part of it.
The legions of advocates, who, through decades of acts large and small have bent the curve of sustainability toward possibility instead of dark inevitability?
That’s a part of it too.
The literally thousands of small things we all can do every day to make a difference for the next generation?
Yep. You got it. That’s a part of Earth Day.
Yet there’s something more basic, and even more important to celebrate this year.
It’s that the Earth is one thing we all still have in common.
The ground we walk on, the air we breathe, the water we drink – Earth Day reminds us that we share these things as one human family. It’s recognition that our destinies are tied together inextricably. That our fates are determined by how we treat each other and the planet we’re so lucky to live on.
So, whether you can come to Croton’s Earth Day celebration and enjoy the activities, the food, the information and the camaraderie…
…or whether you celebrate the earth by picking up stray trash, reducing single-use plastics, composting your food waste, and re-wilding your lawn…
…remember, the next steps we take, we take together.
With a choice to walk toward a setting sun, or a rising one.

The success of first Earth Day celebration on April 22, 1970 inspired the creation under President Nixon of the Environmental Protection Agency which was established in December 1970. He signed the Clean Air Act into law on December 31, 1970. He also signed the Clean Water Act in 1972, and the Endangered Species Act in 1973.
