Croton-on-Hudson's John Sarcone appointed U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York. [Updated Mar 5]
The conservative attorney comes from a long line of Crotonites.
Croton’s John Sarcone, who most recently ran unsuccessfully for Westchester County District Attorney against Democrat Susan Cacace, has now been named U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York by the Trump administration’s Department of Justice. His start date for the position is March 17.
Sarcone will be replacing Carla B. Freedman, who resigned the position on February 17. Freedman had been the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District since October 2021. (Daniel Hanlon has been the Acting U.S. Attorney since her departure.)
The appointment is a “major new position for me,” Sarcone told the Chronicle. According to the Northern District’s Web site:
“The Northern District of New York encompasses 32 counties in Northern and Central New York, covering an area of more than 30,000 square miles. It is home to approximately 3.4 million people. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in this District employs approximately 50 Assistant U.S. Attorneys and more than 50 support personnel who work in staffed offices in Syracuse, Albany, Binghamton, and Plattsburgh.”
And while the Northern District may be “upstate,” it nevertheless handles a lot of high profile cases. Some examples from just the month of March:

Sarcone, who has worked primarily as an attorney for businesses, municipalities, and labor unions, is a well-known local conservative. During his run against Cacace, for example, he campaigned on such issues as crime and illegal immigration, arguing that “one-party rule is creating crisis after crisis.” Sarcone was particularly harsh on New York’s bail reform, charging that provisions like cashless bail “are emboldening criminals and terrorizing law-abiding citizens.”
Sarcone says that he is “deeply humbled and proud” to have been named to the position, especially since he comes “from a humble blue collar background.” Sarcone adds that he had the same teachers as his parents at Croton-Harmon High School, and that his grandmother also graduated from CHHS, while working full-time and going to school at night.
This is a developing story, and we hope to have more news and updates concerning Sarcone’s appointment in the near future.
Update March 5: After we went to press with this story the Department of Justice put out a press release about Sarcone’s appointment with some additional details. You can access it here.
