Censorship in Croton: Part Two
A Chronicle Editorial on censorship of speech at village meetings has now itself been censored on village Facebook groups.
Subscribers to The Croton Chronicle will have received a post this morning about events at a housing “information session” last evening at the village municipal building, and attempts to silence a resident from speaking his mind about the issues being discussed.
Shortly after the Editorial was published—and we had posted it on several village Facebook pages as is our custom—one or more individuals fraudulently reported it to Facebook as supposedly violating the site’s rules. Facebook promptly took it down.
We have appealed this decision, but it will take up to four or more days for the appeal to be processed.
In the meantime, we would ask subscribers to copy the link to the post and share it widely with your friends and neighbors (the link has the updated version with the video recording of what happened at the meeting.) To do this, simply right click on the link (the letters in red) and then save it using the dropbox you should see.
You can also simply forward the email you received from the Chronicle, although that version will not have the link to the video.
Fortunately, as we write, the original Editorial already has about a thousand views, but many villagers see Chronicle stories on Facebook and get the links to them there. After nearly a year of publication, we know for a fact that many villagers rely on the Chronicle as a critical source of information about what is going on in the village.
No matter what, censorship of information and opinion in our village is unacceptable.
Thank you.
