Ana Teague chosen as new Croton-Harmon Board president; Omar Mayyasi is VP.
Two Board members who ran uncontested in last month's district election will now take the helm, as former president Sarah Carrier steps down.
At last evening’s Board of Education meeting (July 11), the Board voted to make Ana Teague its new president, replacing Sarah Carrier who is stepping down. Omar Mayyasi has been selected as the new Vice-President.
Both Teague and Mayyasi were re-elected to the Board last month in an uncontested election, although there were many issues at play in the school district. Teague’s official bio can be viewed here, and Mayyasi’s here.
Although school is out right now, of course, the Board under Teague’s new leadership is facing a number of important and contentious issues. While a federal judge yesterday dismissed the Parents Defending Education lawsuit against the district—a decision PDE’s lawyers asked for and are now expected to quickly appeal—the dismissal was “without prejudice,” meaning that PDE could refile the case at any time, for example if a Croton-Harmon parent or student decided to be named.
In related matters, the Board is still working on its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policy, which has gone through several drafts in recent months. A number of parents have argued that academics are being ignored during this process.
Meanwhile the failed negotiations between the district and the Aides of Croton United, which represents most of the district’s low-paid school workers, are headed into mediation.
In other words, it may be a long hot summer for our students, parents, and the school district. The Chronicle will cover any and all newsworthy events.
